Deep in the forest

Deep in the forest

I thought I had the scare of a lifetime when I found the dead man hanging from a noose deep in the forest.

Then it started following me by swinging from tree to tree.

All my life, my mother has said it was an accident and not to blame myself for drowning my little brother in the bath tub while we were playing.

I don’t remember what happened, but he says she’s a liar and she’s the one who held his head underwater.

“Genie, I wish there was enough food on this Earth that no one ever had to go hungry.”

“Granted,” he replied with a laugh, but nothing changed.

“Dad, why did mum have to die when I was born?” my daughter asked at bedtime tonight.

“Because you’re special,” I replied, stroking her horns.

“Come, on in,” I cheerily invited my guests as I swung open my front door.

“Chill, Harry, it’s just the wind,” the taller one said to the shorter one as he stepped inside.
